A group of residents at Manchester's oldest social housing block have occupied a communal area and reached the fifth day of a sit-in protest, after housing chiefs told them the room would have to close outside of regular hours for various reasons, including health and safety. Calling themselves the Dwellers, the five pension-age residents have said the decision to shut the area is an example of ageism and oppression.

After a minor disagreement over the use of the room during the Christmas period, council housing managers sent letters to every person living in Victoria Square, telling them that they could no longer use the space over the weekends, or in the evenings, despite decades of established use for everything from get-togethers to birthday parties, for health and safety reasons. 14-year resident Josie Loftus, said: "They are using health and safety as a weapon".
