‘Reminiscence’: Lisa Joy’s Nostalgic, Noir-Inspired Gem Is Packed With Intellectual & Emotional Thrills [Review]

Like finding a grubby, balled-up bill in your spangly g-string and uncrumpling it to discover doughy old Ben Franklin staring benignly back at you, Ana Lily Amirpour‘s third feature is a sweet, scuzzy surprise made all the sweeter/scuzzier because you don’t know quite what you did to deserve it.

Director Joe Wright (“The Darkest Hour“) was extremely productive last year during the pandemic and shot a new movie “Cyrano” in Noto, Sicily, with a fantastic cast that includes Emmy-winner Peter Dinklage (“I Care A Lot“), Haley Bennett (“The Magnificent Seven“), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“The Trial of The Chicago 7“), Ben Mendelsohn (“The Marsh King’s Daughter“), and Bashir Salahuddin (“Top Gun: Maverick“).

“Bull,” the newest effort from director Paul Andrew Williams (“Song For Marion”), fits into the niche category of revenge thriller far better than many other similar offerings. These films aren’t always the most rewatchable, as the heavy subject matter usually leans heavily into some intensely dark territory, with a recurring premise usually surrounding someone emerging from a horrific personal tragedy with a bloodthirsty vendetta against those who’ve done them wrong.

HBO Max — is a burdensome slog.Running time: 114 minutes. Rated PG-13 (strong violence, drug material throughout, sexual content and some strong language).

While Lisa Joy’s new feature directorial debut Reminiscence isn’t a crossover to her co-created HBO series Westworld, one could easily argue that they’re distant cousins.

Lisa Joy hardly needs an introduction. Having entered television as a writer on Bryan Fuller’s beloved series “Pushing Daisies,” Joy went on to write a whopping 19 episodes of “Burn Notice” before, in 2016, co-creating HBO’s “Westworld” with her husband, Jonathan Nolan.
