King Charles and Queen Camilla wanted Kate Middleton to change the way she spelt her name when she joined the Royal Family, Prince Harry claimed. The Duke of Sussex said his father and stepmother wanted the Princess of Wales to spell her first name Catherine with a K because there were already too many first names in the family beginning with a C.
Charles and Camilla were apparently concerned that too many names beginning with the same letter would cause confusion, especially when it came to their cyphers – the personal monogram of a member of the Royal Family. At the time, Charles, Camilla and Catherine would have all used the single letter ‘C’.
In his memoir Spare, Harry wrote: "There were already two royal cyphers with a C and a crown above: Charles and Camilla. It would be too confusing to have another." The Duke of Sussex further claimed that his brother, Prince William, remained "inexpressive" upon hearing the proposal for Princess Kate to change the spelling of her name.
Harry also referenced how much his father Charles admired Kate’s hair and had ‘often spoken’ of how lovely it was.
The Duke wrote that both Charles and his late grandmother the Queen liked ‘women with their hair down’, as well as minimal make-up. He added that his wife Meghan Markle went for this look when she first went to meet her future father and mother-in-law at Clarence House, where they ate crumpets with marmite and salmon sandwiches.
Harry and Meghan’s relationship with members of the Royal Family has been strained since the couple decided to step back from senior royal duties in 2020. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex went on to give an interview to Oprah Winfrey in 2021 - which was followed up at the end of last year with their controversial
