Radio 2 listeners were in for a shock on Thursday morning when usual host Zoe Ball was replaced by Radio royalty Tony Blackburn. Earlier in the week Tony had emotionally signed off on his last show for BBC Berkshire, Oxford and Solent.
However, he later returned to the airwaves to step in for Zoe, who recently announced that she would be taking some time off after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Earlier this month she shad shared the sad news on Instagram, writing: "Heartbreakingly our beautiful Mama Julia has been diagnosed with Cancer.
"As many of you know from experience, these are extremely tough times. Mum is being incredibly brave.
My brother Jamie & I are completely in awe of the brilliant Doctors, Nurses & support teams looking after Mum.

"I have a newfound admiration for all carers.
I have realised that perhaps my calling was below stairs after all! I make a fine tea, I've been doing a marvellous lot of ironing and doing lots of admin. "I've had some real heartbreaking messages from people who have lost loved ones to cancer recently, you are all in my heart." Sharing the news that Tony would be covering for Zoe today (28 March) the BBC announced: "Tony has just taken over the controls in the studio and is now broadcasting live on Radio 2, playing just 60s tracks like he played to listeners all those years ago on Radio Caroline." And opening the show, he told listeners:
