A predatory paedophile may not have been free to kidnap and violently sexually assault a six-year-old girl if police had acted more quickly, a court heard. Lewis Jones, 24, abducted the child while she played with friends on a field in Droylsden, Tameside.
The victim was left bloodied and traumatised following the horrifying sexual attack, which was committed in broad daylight in August last year. At the time Jones was already known to police in Merseyside, who had interviewed him in relation to the sexual abuse of a child committed in 2020.
He was interviewed twice by officers, in June 2020 and April 2021, but he was released under investigation and was therefore free to carry out the attack in Tameside. Manchester Crown Court heard that a number of issues meant that Jones was not charged until after he had attacked the child in Droylsden last summer.

On Tuesday, he was handed a life sentence and ordered to serve a minimum of 12 years in prison, after admitting kidnap and two counts of assault by penetration in relation to the attack last year, and four counts of sexual activity with a child, assault by penetration and having indecent images of children in relation to the 2020 offences.
"The net result is in this case, a defendant, who if he had been charged when he should have been, would not have been at liberty to abduct this six-year-old girl," Judge Hilary Manley said. "That's the cold fact of the case."
The judge demanded an explanation of the situation from Merseyside Police. She said the force's response included a chronology which made 'very unhappy reading'.
