Police cars remain stationed outside Nicola Sturgeon and Peter Murrell’s home for a second day as investigations into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party continue.
Former SNP Chief Executive Mr Murrell, who is married to the former First Minister, was arrested at around 8am on Wednesday morning after police raided their home in Uddingston, Lanarkshire. However, the 58-year-old was released without charge, pending further investigation, last night after being questioned for almost 12 hours.
A heavy police presence remains at the couple’s house today, with officers continuing to stand guard outside the cordoned off property. The blue tent placed on their driveway by cops yesterday morning is still erect as investigations continue.
Neighbours said they haven’t seen the couple at the property since yesterday morning. During Wednesday’s large-scale search, Police were seen removing items and photographing garden tools.
Bags of evidence were also seen being removed from the SNP's headquarters in Edinburgh. Ms Sturgeon released a statement saying she had "no prior knowledge" of the police probe, but would "fully cooperate" with the investigation if required.
Police released a statement on Wednesday evening saying Mr Murrell had been released.
A spokesperson said: "A 58-year-old man who was arrested as a suspect earlier today, Wednesday, April 5 2023, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party, has been released without charge pending further investigation. The man was questioned by Police Scotland detectives after he was arrested at 7.45am. He was released from custody at 6.57pm.
