Police have confirmed that a fire which tore through a former nightclub in Fife is being treated as wilful. Shocked onlookers watched on as parts of the roof of the former Kitty's nightclub on Hunter Street in Kirkcaldy began falling to the ground as plumes of smoke billowed from the building.
The massive blaze broke out at around 2.45pm yesterday, sparking a huge emergency response. It was the third time this year the building has been on fire.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed that 40 firefighters tackled the inferno at its peak. Video footage shared with the Daily Record shows the moment part of the roof collapses.
Large flames could be seen twisting out from a turret on the corner of the roof of the building, blowing in the wind, as firefighters battled the blaze. Masonry could be seen crumbling and large pieces of the roof broke off and crashed down onto the pavement below, close to where the firefighters were positioned with a hose.
A crowd of people gathered to watch the drama unfold and could be heard screaming and shouting "oh no" as the turret finally gave way and collapsed into the shell of the building.
Police said today that it is thought the fire was started deliberately, and said that some surrounding streets remain closed in the Fife town. A spokesperson said: “Around 3pm on Sunday, September 3, officers were called to a report of a fire in a derelict premises on Hunter Street, Kirkcaldy.
“Emergency services attended. There were no reports of injuries. Wemyssfield, Hunter Street and part of Hunter Place remain closed. Officers are treating the fire as wilful and enquiries are ongoing.”
An SFRS spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.46pm on Sunday, September 3, to reports of a building
