Police are investigating after a 'hateful' remark was posted online referring to the death of Gary Speed. The former footballer, who played for Bolton Wanderers, tragically took his own life aged 42 in 2011 while serving as manager of the Welsh national team.
A comment mocking Speed was posted on X (formerly Twitter) following the FA Cup match between Newcastle United, another of his former clubs, and local rivals Sunderland on Saturday (January 6). The message referred to Speed's death and contained homophobic connotations, Chronicle Live reports.
It was quickly condemned online and reported to Northumbria Police. While the account responsible has since been deleted, Northumbria Police has confirmed it is investigating the post.

One Newcastle United fan, sharing a screenshot of the post, wrote: "We may be rivals on the football pitch but this is absolutely disgusting, Speed was a gentleman and more of a man than you will ever be, rivalry aside we unite in trying to beat the stigma about men feeling like they have to kill themselves when they feel alone #NUFC #SAFC."
Another added: "This is when I despair of the human race. Disgusting hardly expresses how I feel about that post," while a third went on: "As a sunderland fan, he doesn't speak for me or anyone I know. Speed was a hell of a player and a real pro. RIP."
A fourth added: "Obviously can't tar all Mackems with the same brush but this is horrible, totally uncalled for and downright pathetic, this guy should be ashamed of himself." The tweet caught the attention of Northumbria Police, which explained it was aware of the original post and that it was being investigated.
