A new National Trans Monument has been proposed for the former site of the UK’s first trans memorial, which was destroyed following a fire two years ago.
The memorial tree in Sackville Gardens, within Manchester’s Gay Village, was left ‘irreparably damaged’ by a fire during Manchester Pride 2022. The Sycamore tree, which had been part of the gardens for eight years, had been specifically carved as a memorial and was decorated with plaques of trans people who had passed away.
Sparkle, the national transgender charity, has now unveiled plans to replace the sculpture with a new ‘Passing on Light’ design that symbolises the strength and spirit of the trans community and gender diverse people.

Made from polished metal, which will subtly mirror visitors, the gardens and the city, the new monument comprises a series of figures which offer moments of contemplation and reflection.
Each figure is grounded with a stone base that rises from steel posts that have been created to be robust and weather-proof. Sparkle said the figures ‘will stand strong and tall of their own accord, but together take on a collective strength of public presence’.
Created alongside New Practice, an LGBTQIA+ and women-led architectural practice, and global professional services firm Arup, proposals for the new design have now been filed for planning permission with Manchester Council.
The final design, named Passing on Light, was conceived by Bek Ziola, lead architect at New Practice, following an extensive open-call to artists and designers.
