Emergency services swarmed a Greater Manchester street after a Second World War grenade was discovered at a house. Residents were urged to stay inside their homes within a 100m cordon around the scene in Lowton, near Wigan.
A suspicious item discovered in a shed was reported to police at 12.50pm yesterday (May 12). The old grenade was discovered by the new occupants of a house on Bradwell Road.
Neighbours were urged to remain in their homes while emergency services carried out their work. An army bomb disposal unit joined police and firefighters at the scene.

A fire engine from Leigh and one from Atherton joined the operation at around 2.45pm, following reports of a suspected explosive device at the scene. North West Ambulance Service also attended.
The grenade was eventually moved from the scene for a controlled explosion. A GMP Wigan West spokesperson wrote on Facebook: "The Leigh and Hindley neighbourhood teams had a blast today working alongside [Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service] Red Watch at Leigh, NWAS Incident Response Unit and the Army Bomb Disposal Team to safely dispose of an unexploded WW2 Grenade found by the new resident of a house in Lowton.
"Officers would like to thank the majority of residents whose homes were within the 100m cordon for acceding to our requests to remain indoors for their safety while Emergency Services worked with the Army to recover and remove the grenade to a rural location where the Bomb Disposal Team successfully conducted a controlled explosion. Certainly a shift that went with a bang!"
