Homeowners have been warned about a common paint disposal mistake that could leave them hundreds of pounds out of pocket. Home DIY endeavours often result in leftover paint, and many individuals are unsure how to handle it, with some resorting to pouring it down the sink.
It's estimated that around 480 Brits search for "can you wash paint down the sink" on Google each year. However, experts at The Paint Shed have highlighted the risks associated with this practice and offered advice on how to properly dispose of paint.
Pouring unused paint down the drain may appear to be a simple solution, but it can lead to significant problems. Paint particles can adhere to pipes, accumulating over time and causing serious blockages, which might necessitate costly professional plumbing services.

Unblocking drains can incur call-out fees as high as £400. Beyond the financial implications, there's also an environmental concern; harmful chemicals from paint can damage ecosystems if they enter water systems.
Michael Rolland, managing director at The Paint Shed, has provided insights on the most effective methods for disposing of paint to avoid these issues, reports Bristol Live.
"If you've ever refreshed even one room in your home, the chances are you have at least one or two leftover cans of paint. It's often useful to keep this leftover paint as it can be useful for touch-ups when the inevitable wear and tear happens, covering any scuffs or marks on walls or skirting boards. When you no longer have use for leftover paints there are a few options to choose from," he said.
