‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Succession’ & ‘The Bear’ Top 2024 PGA Awards

Joe Otterson TV Reporter The 96th annual Academy Awards ceremony drew 19.5 million viewers on ABC Sunday night. Per the time zone adjusted fast national ratings, Sunday’s telecast drew 19.5 million viewers and a 3.8 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic airing from 7:00-10:29 p.m ET. By comparison, the 2023 telecast drew 18.8 million viewers and a 4.0 rating in the final tallies.

Oppenheimer ended the evening as the top-winning movie. The biopic about the man who created the atomic bomb earned seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor.Poor Things came next, with four trophies. The biggest honor that the film snagged was Best Actress, with Emma Stone beating out fellow favorite Lily Gladstone, nominated for Killers of the Flower Moon.The only other movie to collect more than one Oscar was Jonathan Glazer’s harrowing Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest, which won Best International Feature and an extremely well-deserved Sound Design win.Three of the four acting categories went to first-time winners.

The Oscars took place on Sunday night, with the ceremony celebrating the very best talent in film, design and sound. A whole host of celebrities headed to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the special event, which is celebrating its 96th year.The popular film Oppenheimer cleaned up nicely, taking home a grand total of seven awards including the highly-coveted Best Picture.The film's director Christopher Nolan also picked up the Best Director award, and its star Cillian Murphy was awarded the Best Leading Actor gong.

And after a strike-affected awards season, with little controversy (well, maybe), Jimmy Kimmel is ready to emcee a ceremony that promises a massive “I’m Just Ken” musical number and a lot of wins for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” In fact, one of the only big questions remaining for the night is in one of the few categories where the blockbuster didn’t earn a nomination: Best Actress.

In some ways, Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s biggest non-superhero movie, was a product of the pandemic. Until the winter of 2020, the director had been loyal to Warner Bros., and their logo was to be found on every film that Nolan either wrote, directed or produced.
