Film Independent said Tuesday that it has added a Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series category ahead of its 2024 Spirit Awards, which are set to take place Sunday, February 25.

Katcy Stephan Allison Janney is joining the cast of Amazon MGM Studios’ “A Simple Favor 2.” The actor will join returning cast members Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick in the sequel to Paul Feig’s hit 2018 mystery-comedy film. The sequel will follow Stephanie (Kendrick) and Emily (Lively) as they head to the beautiful island of Capri for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a wealthy Italian businessman.

After an eventful Spirit Awards, the industry’s attention shifted to Hollywood and the Ray Dolby Ballroom where the 2024 PGA Awards were handed out. The big winner, obviously, was Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” which took Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Poctures.

Women dominated in gender-neutral acting categories in the first year of their institution at the Independent Spirit Awards, claiming four statuettes at Saturday’s ceremony.

We are coming down the home stretch of the 2022-2023 award season, with the Oscars eight days away. The 38th Independent Spirit Awards is the last big award show left before we find out who will become our new batch of Academy Award winners.

The 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards kick off Saturday at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT on the beach at the Santa Monica Pier. The ceremony, hosted by Hasan Minhaj, will be livestreamed on Film Independent’s YouTube channel and Twitter feed as well as on IMDb’s YouTube channel.

Colin Farrell are among the nominated stars doubling as presenters at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. Other principal actors taking the stage to introduce clips of cast performances from their respective films include Jovan Adepo, Diego Calva and Li Jun Li (“Babylon”); Farrell and Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”); Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”); Paul Dano, Gabriel LaBelle and Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”); and Jessie Buckley, Claire Foy and Rooney Mara (“Women Talking”). Additions to the presenter lineup were revealed Feb. 21 by Jon Brockett, executive producer of the awards show.

Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards, has selected 30 filmmakers for Project Involve 2023 and with a renewed partnership with LAIKA Studios, expanded the stop-motion animation track into a two-year program, selecting five filmmakers.

Canada’s top film and television awards are going gender-neutral.

Wilson Chapman editor The 2023 Independent Spirit Awards will implement gender neutral acting categories, Film Independent announced on Tuesday. The award ceremony, which honors the best in independent filmmaking and television production, will now present three film acting awards and two TV acting awards that are all gender neutral. The gendered film categories — male lead, female lead, male supporting and female supporting — have been eliminated, in favor of a lead performance and supporting performance category. Both will feature 10 nominees each, as opposed to the gendered categories which included five nominees. In addition, a new best breakthrough performance category has been added, which will feature five nominees of any gender.
