Nathan Patterson will find out this weekend if his Euro 2024 dream is over.
The Everton right back is set for a scan on the hamstring injury he suffered during the Goodison club's 6-0 battering at Chelsea on Monday night. The former Rangers star will head to London to visit a specialist to discover the true extent of his injury. And while Steve Clarke will give him every chance to prove his fitness ahead of the deadline for submitting his 23-man Scotland squad on June 7, the Daily Mail reports that Patterson's chances of going to Germany are "wafer thin" at this stage.
That presents an unwelcome headache for Clarke. He is already sweating on the fitness of first choice right back Aaron Hickey. The former Hearts man has also been out with a hamstring injury, although Brentford's head of player development and fellow Tynecastle alumni Steven Pressley confirmed that Hickey is "progressing well" and that the Euros remain a possibility.
Hickey hasn't played since October, but his availability would come as a major boost to Clarke in the wake of Patterson's issue. Bologna star Lewis Ferguson has already has his tournament dream dashed after suffering a serious knee injury.
Clarke will be praying his squad come through June's friendly games against Gibraltar and Finland with no further problems. The Scots head to Gibraltar on 3 June before welcoming the Finns to Hampden four days later - the day Clarke must confirm his pool for Germany. Then it's the big one a week later, taking on the hosts in Munich on opening night.
