Manchester United's midfield is a conundrum that has puzzled Erik ten Hag for much of the season.
Might the answer be found in a slight, 5ft 7in teenager tipped for the top and already making waves across Europe? Joao Neves has been linked with a move to Old Trafford and the 19-year-old is a precocious talent who made his international debut for Portugal this week.
The midfielder has been a jewel in the crown of an exciting crop of Benfica youngsters who won the European Youth League in 2022. The Portuguese giants are well versed in developing talent to export to the Premier League and since Enzo Fernandez departed for Chelsea in January, Neves has stepped in to fill the void with devastating effect.

He has become a first-team regular this season and caught the eye in their opening two Champions League matches, even though both ended in defeat. Europe's biggest clubs are aware of the teenager and United have been linked with a move.
Neves is a technical player capable of dictating the game from the base of midfield with an exceptional passing ability and a combative nature. He's already caught the eye of Portugal team-mates and United regulars Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot. The latter said Neves possessed 'all the qualities' to be at United while the Reds skipper namechecked the teenager when talking about the next generation of talent seeking starting spots in the national side.
