‘Marvel Snap’ plans to “flourish” despite reports of publisher closing

The speculation is always churning around the Marvel Universe and it didn’t help there was a lot of crossover misinformation about the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie and “Captain America: Brave New World” earlier this year and last. Last night the trades didn’t help, with Deadline accidentally claiming that Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/Winter Solider was in “Captain America 4,” outlets covering it and then the trade quickly deleting the information.

Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Glenn Close has been tapped to portray the legendary Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow in Apple TV+’s The New Look. The streamer revealed the news today along with two first-look photos of Close as the character. You can see them below. The role marks the first reunion for Close and The New Look creator Todd A. Kessler since their collaboration on the acclaimed series Damages.

Though 2023 has been a rough year for Marvel Studios, it’s not like the studio is giving up and shutting down shop. There are still an absolute ton of new projects on the horizon for the biggest franchise in cinema history, and one, relatively small, branch of this massive cinematic universe is the animated series that are being produced.

News was reported by Bloomberg, Reuters and other tech news providers The Information and The Verge on Monday that Bytedance will retreat from its mainstream video games operation with the loss of some 1,000 jobs. “We regularly review our businesses and make adjustments to centre on long-term strategic growth areas,” a ByteDance representative said in a statement sent to some media. “Following a recent review, we’ve made the difficult decision to restructure our gaming business.” Variety has also reached out to Bytedance for comment. Nuverse, the unit for most of Bytedance’s games, is understood to have told employees that it will halt nearly all games that have not yet launched.

When Marvel finds a writer or filmmaker they like, particularly Kevin Feige, the studio tends to hang on to them. And perhaps recently, no one in the current Marvel Studios bullpen has done more repeat business with Marvel Studios with writer/producer Michael Waldron.

Way back in 2018, during the whole “New Mutants” debacle (remember that mess?), it was reported that Jon Hamm was actually expected to make an appearance in the film as the villainous Mr. Sinister.

TikTok owner ByteDance is set to move away from mainstream gaming, with Marvel Snap publisher Nuverse being restructured.Over the past 18 months, TikTok has been giving gaming a bigger platform on the video-sharing app by launching a dedicated gaming channel on the homepage alongside special, gaming events and a series of its own mini-games. TikTok’s owner ByteDance also launched games publisher Nuverse in 2019, which is behind mobile card game Marvel Snap and Warhammer 40,000: Lost Crusade, and acquired a number of external studios including C4games in 2021.In March, Nuverse announced it would be publishing Dragonheir: Silent Gods, a high-fantasy open-world game that’s being developed by SGRA Studio, which was released last month.However, a new report from Reuters suggests that ByteDance will be pivoting away from gaming with Nuverse set to be wound down over the next few months.

To say that this year has been rough for Marvel Studios is a bit of an understatement. The studio that was once thought to be invincible has shown that it has weaknesses and audiences are starting to take note.

Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward.As reported by IndieWire, tracking data for the studio’s latest release, The Marvels, states only 19 per cent of the opening weekend audience was between ages 18-24. 30 per cent, however, was in the 25-34 bracket, while only 8 per cent were between ages 13-17.As noted by the outlet, 40 per cent of the audience for the film’s 2019 predecessor, Captain Marvel, was aged 18-24.
