When injury ended Martin Boyle’s World Cup dream he was sent vile messages from trolls who hoped he would NEVER play again.
The Hibs winger was cruelly ruled out of Qatar 2022 in November after rupturing his cruciate ligament in a league game against St Mirren. Despite being named in the Socceroos squad for the tournament, Boyle was pulled out on the eve of their opening game against France.
It was a crushing blow for the 29-year-old whose spirits were lifted by best wishes and messages of support from within the game. But Boyle has revealed that he still suffered online abuse while dealing with the lowest point of his career. And he has vowed to use them as motivation to return even stronger for Hibs and Australia. Boyle said: “When the news was released, I was still in hospital and I got loads of messages of support.
“Ex-players, boys I’ve played with, former managers – it was quite overwhelming. But obviously on social media, it wasn’t always pretty.
“The bad messages I got will just drive me on to prove that I can still play. I had a few negative ones. Some simple-minded people got in touch to say they hope I never play again, I don’t know why anyone would do that.
“But it seems to be part of the game now. I’m a happy-go-lucky guy, I can laugh it off. Hopefully I can come back and score a few goals against their team.
“After what happened to me, I’d like to think I can handle anything that’s thrown at me. I enjoy entertaining on the pitch and I don’t mind the abuse that comes with it.”
