It’s perhaps a little known fact that Manchester City star Matheus Nunes used to work in a bakery before he hit it big as a footballer. So, the superstar was taken back to his roots last week to work a shift at a popular hatch-style bakery in Ancoats to see if he remembered a thing or two.
Matheus, who represented Portugal at the 2022 Fifa World Cup and joined City in a £53 million bid this summer following a year at Wolverhampton Wanderers, visited The Flat Baker to serve customers and try his hand at making one of the bakery’s best-selling products.
The bakery, which was recently nominated Independent Food Producer of the Year at this year’s Manchester Food and Drink Awards, has proven to be a big hit in Ancoats since it opened last year. The business started life during lockdown and is run by couple Matt and Deborah, who are both originally from Brazil.

"I want to see if I can do some of the baking I used to do with my mum as a kid,” Matheus explained to the Ancoats bakery owners as he joined them in their kitchen. “I worked in a bakery for a year where I used to help to sell the products.”
Matheus, 25, has previously spoken about working at his family’s Pão da Vila bakery in the seaside town of Ericeira whilst undergoing football training. He explained: "My godfather, who is a very good friend of my mum's, had a bakery. At some point I had to choose between school and soccer.
“I failed a lot in school so my mom reached a point where she said: 'You choose, one of the two, to give up football or school
