Manchester Arndale market remains closed today (Saturday) following a fire which resulted in the evacuation of the shopping centre. Firefighters were called to Arndale at about 4pm on Friday after a blaze broke on one of the food stalls in the south side of the market hall.
Hundreds of shoppers were asked to leave the Arndale while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. The mall reopened after about 90 minutes, but the market remained closed.
On Saturday morning Coun Pat Karney, Manchester council's city centre spokesperson, gave an update on the fire. He posted on X, formerly Twitter: "Following the fire on one of the food stalls last night which led to a evacuation of the centre the market is closed today to allow further investigations and clean up. We apologise for all this disruption but public safety always comes first."

One office worker described 'chaotic scenes' as some shoppers, unaware of what was happening, attempting to enter the Arndale while the evacuation was underway.
In a statement last night a spokesperson for the Arndale said: "We have supported Manchester City Council with the evacuation of the market hall, following a report of a small fire at around 4pm on Friday in one of the restaurants there. The fire brigade attended the scene, and the fire was extinguished.
"The safety and security of everyone at the centre is always our first priority and we have close working relationships with both the council – who manage the market hall – and the wider authorities. Our staff are fully trained and prepared for this sort of situation."
