A man told a top judge that he "completely forgot" to show up for jury duty.
John Culshaw was ordered to "show cause" or explain his absence before the Honorary Recorded or Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC on Monday, August 14. It comes after he "repeatedly failed to attend for jury service when required" at Liverpool Crown Court.
As reported in the Liverpool Echo, the court heard that the 24-year-old did not show up for his first day of jury duty but did attend for subsequent days. Culshaw, of Sandyville Road in Walton, was then was a no show for his second week of service.
After staff contacted him, he reported that he was struggling with his mental health but failed to produce a requested doctor's note. His second week of service was deferred, but the juror did not attend for this rearranged date.
Culshaw told the court yesterday: "I'm not here to lie to anyone. I completely forgot. My mental health was going through the roof for family reasons. I couldn't concentrate on jury service when I was in it.
"The second time around, I've got no excuse. I completely forgot about it on the Monday."
Culshaw, who was allowed to sit in the body of the court rather than being made to enter the dock, added that he was "looking for work" and in receipt of Universal Credit, having previously worked valeting cars and in warehouses. He also said he "hadn't been in trouble with the police" previously.
The unrepresented defendant admitted contempt of court. Wearing a khaki green Berghaus zip-up top, Culshaw was fined £100 - a sum which he must pay within two months or face seven days in prison in default.
