A man who found his vulnerable brother lying dead weeks after a vicious assault says he was banned from attending court to look the teenage attacker in the eye and "see if he was sorry".
Tom Quigley fought back tears as he recalled finding the body of his brother David Quigley, 69, with a facial expression suggesting he had "died in pain, in pain and alone".
Last month, Tom was refused permission to attend the sentencing of a 15-year-old boy who battered David over the head in his own home, because his attendance in Liverpool Youth Court could have caused "undue stress" to the young defendant, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Speaking to the ECHO at his home in Heswall, Tom, 67, said: "I felt I was totally excluded from the process. In all the things that were said, what I was looking for was to be able to look him in the eye and gauge for myself whether he was sorry."
On the day of the sentencing, retired contract manager Tom had prepared a victim personal statement and was anxiously waiting in the witness care area of the court building, in Derby Square, for the "daunting" opportunity to face the teenager.
He said: "It was something I felt I needed to do, really, for my healing, for my closure."
Tom was denied that chance by a decision taken by a panel of magistrates.
The court had heard David, who had long-standing mental health issues and walked with a stick, suffered a bleed on the brain and spent eight days in hospital after confronting the teenage burglar late on October 25 last year.
