Man accused of murder following 'disturbance' nearly four years ago

A man has appeared before a judge after being charged with murder following an incident nearly four years ago. Dean Hughes, 46, was charged with the murder of Shane Maloney after police were called to a 'disturbance' in Leigh.
Mr Maloney was assaulted in November 2019 and died 15 months later. Hughes appeared at Manchester Crown Court on Monday morning for a preliminary hearing.
He was not asked to enter a plea, and the case was adjourned for a further hearing to be held next month. A trial date was not set.

Judge Nicholas Dean KC, the Honorary Recorder of Manchester, told the defendant: "This hearing is called a preliminary hearing, it is necessary only because the magistrates, when they sent this case involving an allegation of murder to the crown court, have no power to deal with an application for bail that may be made. You will continue to be remained in custody."
A police statement issued previously said: "At around 7pm on 8 November 2019, Greater Manchester Police responded to reports of a disturbance at an address on Wigan Road in Leigh. Shane sadly passed away in March 2021, 15 months after the incident."
