Despite only being in charge at Old Trafford for two years, former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was no stranger to waving goodbye to members of his squad.

Alexander Buttner - After just two seasons and 28 appearances at United, the left-back departed in June 2014, joining Dynamo Moscow. He cited a lack of regular opportunities and personal differences with Van Gaal as the reasons behind his departure. He has had several different clubs since leaving Old Trafford and currently plays for Dutch outfit De Graafschap, whom he joined in April this year.
Patrice Evra - Despite signing a new contract less than two months earlier, Evra was among the first players to be sold by Van Gaal, joining Italian giants Juventus for an initial fee of £1.2million. He had won 14 major trophies during his eight-year spell at Old Trafford. He spent three years in Turin before joining Marseille and then West Ham a year later. He hung up his boots in July 2019.
