Manchester United's trip to the Etihad Stadium to face cross-city rivals Manchester City after the international break will mark the beginning of a relentless period for Erik ten Hag's side.
October will see United, who had Sunday's scheduled clash with Leeds United postponed, play nine times in the space of just 29 days. It promises to be a gruelling schedule that will see every player pushed to the very maximum of their physical and mental capabilities.
The Reds will play six times in the Premier League and three in the Europa League next month, meaning there will be occasions when Ten Hag has no choice but to rotate his pack to keep things as fresh as possible. The Dutchman, for the first time, showed that he is not afraid to mix things up and make the most of his squad in the 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad just under a fortnight ago.

The United manager, following a demanding Premier League schedule, made the decision to make six changes, handing starts to the likes of Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Fred, among others. Ten Hag made those decisions with half an eye on the scheduled trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace a few days later. That contest, of course, was later postponed following the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
Therefore, with a hectic October schedule on the horizon, Ten Hag will be forced to tinker even more at certain junctures, most probably in the Europa League. Such is United's status as favourites to win Group E and their strength in depth, the Reds chief can afford to make changes, meaning Donny van de Beek could be among those to benefit most.
