Pep Guardiola insists Liverpool are better than Manchester City because they have more points than the Blues at the halfway stage of the season.
City were fifth and six points behind leaders Arsenal at Christmas, but a productive week has seen them catch up those points with two wins combined with back-to-back defeats for the Gunners. Liverpool and Aston Villa both took three points over Christmas to go into 2024 level on 42 points, but Liverpool can extend that lead on New Year's Day when they play Newcastle.
Even then, Liverpool will have played a game more than City, as have Villa and Arsenal, leaving Guardiola's side within touching distance heading into the new year - and a much easier January. After facing Championship strugglers Huddersfield next weekend in the FA Cup, there is a trip to out-of-form Newcastle followed by a winter break, a possible FA Cup fourth round tie and a home clash with Burnley.

So Guardiola believes his side are well placed to build on their progress over Christmas and use the easier January workload to their advantage - even if Liverpool have the edge in the title race for now.
Assessing City's chances at their halfway mark, Guardiola said: “We’re not top of the league, Liverpool are better. We’ve had injuries and some problems, we won the titles, important ones, our level is really good I would say and we are there. Now rest, we all need it. January is less intense than November and December so we prepare for what’s next.”
