Grammy-Nominated Songwriter Edgar Barrera on Representing Latin Music at 2024 Show: ‘I Already Feel Like a Winner’

Thania Garcia Edgar Barrera is a Grammys rarity: The Mexican-American, Texas-born producer and songwriter is the only (and first) Latin act up for songwriter of the year at the 2024 awards. Less happily, he is also the only Latin act to appear in a Grammy category that isn’t Latin music-specific. Be that as it may, those feats speak to his towering achievements: He has become the go-to songwriter for top-charting acts looking to expand their musical range (he’s responsible for pairing Bad Bunny with the Tejano band Grupo Frontera) and shares songwriting credits with Madonna, Ariana Grande, Maluma, Karol G, Shakira and Peso Pluma, among numerous others.

mental health services over the past two years. The charity, which supports professional musicians in the UK, has warned of a growing mental health crisis in the industry, reporting a 200 per cent increase in people engaging with their services.Help Musicians has a dedicated mental health service called Music Minds Matter, a free, 24/7 service which was launched last year and allows musicians access to counsellors who offer emotional support, advice and information.According to the charity, the burgeoning mental health crisis is connected to financial issues, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic which temporarily brought touring to a halt.“Music is a serious career,” head of Help Musicians Joe Hastings told the BBC. “People creating music work incredibly hard and have very difficult schedules.“It’s a very competitive industry, lots of late nights and time away from home.”He added: “People need to be respected for their abilities and skills, which needs to be reflected in what they earn and the level of skill involved.”One Bristol-based performer said the charity paid for 10 sessions of therapy.

Bowen Yang Belts Out George Santos Ballad in ‘SNL’ Cold Open: ‘America Hates to See a Latina Queen Winning’

Ethan Shanfeld Bowen Yang channels George Santos channeling Elton John in this week’s “Saturday Night Live” cold open, performing a parody of “Candle in the Wind.” “It seems to me like I’ve lived my life like a scandal in the wind / Never knowing who to cling to when the law closed in,” Yang sings as the disgraced congressman. In the next verse, he belts out, “It seems to me like I’ve lived my life like an evil Forrest Gump / I’m the guy who lied even too much for Donald Trump.” At one point, Yang pulls a “fake baby” out of the piano, mirroring a viral video in which Santos carries an undisclosed baby around the halls of Congress.
