Scott McTominay believes the faith Manchester United show in young players has given Kobbie Mainoo the platform to make his eye-catching impact for the club this season.
Mainoo has become a regular in the side this term and the 18-year-old is now a mainstay of the midfield under Erik ten Hag, starting 15 of the last 16 games for the club and earning an England call-up in the process. The academy graduate made his Three Lions debut against Brazil on Saturday night, coming off the bench for the final 15 minutes of a friendly at Wembley.
That was just the 24th senior game of Mainoo's career, which shows how rapid his rise has been, having earned opportunities in pre-season before suffering an ankle injury against Real Madrid in Houston. Ten Hag put him straight back in the team when he returned to fitness in November and he's been outstanding since then, with McTominay praising the platform United give young players for allowing him to flourish.

"Amazing, so happy, he deserves the England call-up. He’s been so good for 24 to 25 [games] now [for Manchester United], he’s barely missed a minute," said McTominay, another midfielder who came through the ranks to make the grade at Old Trafford. "It just shows when you’ve got full confidence in younger players, they’ve got the confidence to go and do exceptional things."
As a fellow academy graduate McTominay has been passing advice on to Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho and urging both teenagers to continue building on their impressive start to life in the first team.
