Paul McEwan Lindsay was jailed for seven years in 2019 after he was convicted of assaulting George Bell to the danger of his life at Kelvin Gardens, Hamilton, on June 24, 2018.
Lindsay, 31, died at HMP Addiewell, West Lothian, last week. Police Scotland have been notified and his death will be probed in a Fatal Accident Inquiry.
Lindsay was originally accused of attempting to murder Mr Bell over the blade attack, but a jury at the High Court in Glasgow cleared him of this and found him guilty of the reduced charge.
Lindsay admitted causing injury to Mr Bell, but claimed he was acting in self-defence. The court heard at the time that Lindsay punched Mr Bell on the head before stabbing him. The victim had wounds to his neck and chest that were described as "potentially life-threatening".
Lindsay had a history of previous convictions for assault, with one incident involving a baseball bat and sword. He was a deemed "high risk" to the public.
An SPS statement said: "Paul McEwan Lindsay, 31, prisoner at HMP Addiewell died on January 31, 2023. He was convicted at Glasgow High Court in 2019.
"Police Scotland have been notified and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
