Tony Nominations Suggest Broadway Is Becoming More Progressive

Gordon Cox Theater Editor The 2023 Tony nominations aren’t just a portrait of theatrical excellence. They’re also a snapshot of Broadway in progress.   After the events of 2020 prompted a wave of public pledges and new initiatives aiming to expand equity and diversity across all sectors of the business, this year’s nominations give theatermakers a chance to check on the change. No nominations list can render a complete picture of an industry and no one would argue that Broadway is done with the work, but all of this year’s nominees say they’re conscious of the ways the nominations reflect a larger, industry-wide shift.  “I think this year shows we are gradually getting better,” says Bonnie Milligan, a 2023 nominee (and, for many, the frontrunner) for featured actress in a musical. The plus-sized actor finds herself in the Tony conversation for “Kimberly Akimbo” after what she describes as years of “getting typed out of so many rooms because of my size.”

Jason Isbell on the Making of ‘Weathervanes,’ Acting for Martin Scorsese, His Candid Documentary and the Role of Empathy in Music

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Jason Isbell has a new album out, “Weathervanes,” and he says, “I’m happy to be talking about it. You know, I’ve been talking about a lot of other stuff lately, and it’s nice to actually discuss the job that I chose for myself.” Nothing against the Other Stuff on his part, mind you. He’s proud of the much-heralded HBO Max documentary that director Sam Jones made about him, “Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed,” even if it did open him and his wife, Amanda Shires, up to a huge amount amount of personal scrutiny. And he’ll sure be spending an even bigger part of the year than he is now talking about his dramatic role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which he now feels confident did not leave him in the position of “be(ing) the one guy that screws up this $200 million movie.”

Baltimore Pride: Everything You Need To Know

“I tell folks, when they ask why to choose Baltimore Pride over other cities’ Prides, is that attending Pride in other cities requires lots of money and can be very pricey,” says Tremor Wilson, senior director of advocacy and community engagement at the Pride Center of Maryland, which organizes Charm City’s annual celebration. “If you go to New York City Pride, for example, hotels are $500 minimum and up, so it’s not affordable to the average person.“With Baltimore Pride, we partner with local hotels to offer affordable rooms that are cheaper than what they’d regularly cost,” Wilson continues.

‘Morning Joe’ Lauds Biden for Debt Ceiling Bill: ‘Show Me a President in the Last 25 Years … That’s Had More Bipartisan Legislation’ (Video)

a Washington Post column from David Ignatius, in which Ignatius argues that Biden “delivered” this week on his inauguration promise that “My whole soul is in this, bringing America together.” But, for Joe Scarborough, Biden “not only delivered this week, he’s been delivering for quite some time.”“You look at how he once again, once again, defied expectations, not only from the haters, but his own party, and it’s a pretty remarkable record,” Scarborough said. “You look at the bipartisan legislation and anybody who would mock that, Willie, please, show me a president in the last 25 years, the last quarter century, that’s had more bipartisan legislation than Joe Biden.”Scarborough also compared Biden to singer Neil Young, recounting a story of a concert Scarborough went to a few years ago, during which Young responded to fans calling out song requests by saying “You know, I’ve done this before.” Scarborough noted that that memory now reminds him of Biden, because “there’s no substitute for experience,” to which Willie Geist largely agreed.“He’s been there before he’s experienced.

Jason Isbell Thought He Was Making a Movie About Music and Ended Up With One About Marriage, Too

A version of this story about “Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine. The latest installment in the HBO Max Music Box series created by Bill Simmons, “Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed” finds director Sam Jones (“Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off,” “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco”) following the writing and recording of singer Jason Isbell’s 2020 album “Reunions.” But the film is about far more than one of the gifted musician and writer’s best albums, delving into his self-destructive days with drugs and alcohol and his marriage to fellow singer Amanda Shires, a charged creative and personal partnership that nearly fell apart while Jones’ cameras were rolling.Sam, why a film about Jason Isbell?Sam Jones: He was on my interview show (“Off Camera With Sam Jones”), and once I chatted with him, I felt like not only did he have an interesting story, but he was good at telling it. So I flew to Nashville and I asked him a couple hours before he went on stage at the Ryman.
