‘Justified’ sequel series: An unnecessary return to the neo-noir Western crime drama

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Amazon-owned Prime Video has launched “The Killing Vote,” a hardboiled crime drama series from Korea. The 12-part show uses the premise that a text message is sent to ordinary citizens who get to vote for or against the application of the death penalty in individual criminal cases. If more than 50% vote in favor, the criminal is killed by a mysterious character called Dog Mask.

As of last year, over a million people have died of opioid overdoses in the United States. The central culprits, as outlined in Netflix’s latest miniseries, “Painkiller,” are Purdue Pharma and the “non-addictive” prescription drug they marketed to anyone with a pulse and a toothache: OxyContin.

Naman Ramachandran “The Long Shadow,” a true crime drama by “Hijack” and “Lupin” creator George Kay, has revealed a stellar cast. Directed by BAFTA-winner director Lewis Arnold (“Sherwood,” “Time,” “Des”) the 7 x 60′ for U.K. broadcaster ITV and streamer ITVX, drama is a depiction of the five-year hunt for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, focusing on the lives of the victims who crossed his path and those of the officers at the heart of the police investigation.

BritBox and based on Jess Ryder’s book of the same name, features an English cast familiar to the US TV audience: Tom Mison (Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow”), Janet Montgomery (NBC’s late, great “New Amsterdam”) and Céline Buckens (“Free Rein,” “Warrior”). It’s a trope-laden drama with just enough surprises to keep viewers interested as it barrels along to a booming finale.The series opens with a meet-not-so-cute between media executive Jack Warrington (Mison) and graphic designer Natasha (“Tasha”), who’s riding her bicycle to work on a busy street when a speeding Jack plows into her with his car.She’s not seriously injured, save for a few bumps and bruises, including a scraped-up arm, and Jack — sheepish, apologetic and wanting to avoid “a scene” — promises to pay for her smashed-up bike.

Maya Hawke already worked with her dad Ethan Hawke on the Flannery O’Connor biopic “Wildcat.” Now it’s time for her to star in something alongside her mom, Uma Thurman. And that something would be “The Kill Room,” a crime comedy about money-laundering scheme that accidentally turns a hitman into an overnight avant-garde sensation.

Joe Leydon Film Critic Writer-director Nicholas Maggio may not have intended to be self-critical when, fairly early in his debut feature “Mob Land,” he has one character observe to another about their failing small Southern town, “This whole place has become a fucking cliché.” But the longer this slackly paced rural noir continues, the more that dialogue seems in retrospect like fair warning. Borrowing freely from “No Country for Old Men,” “Collateral” and maybe a dozen or so other superior films, Maggio has cobbled together a modestly diverting, effectively atmospheric but blatantly derivative crime drama sprinkled with a few joltingly nasty plot twists.

EXCLUSIVE: Bella Thorne (Divinity) and Jack Kilmer (Palo Alto) have been set to topline The Tower, one of 102 projects to have been granted a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement following the launch of the actors strike.
