An inquest jury has been asked to consider whether ‘shortcomings’ during the search for a bed contributed to the death of a young autistic woman who died whilst a patient at a psychiatric ward more than 250 miles from home.
Lauren Bridges, 20, was found unconscious in her en-suite bathroom at the Priory’s Cheadle Royal Hospital at around 10pm on February 24.

The jury, who for four weeks have been hearing the inquest into her death at South Manchester Coroner’s Court in Stockport, today (Wednesday, August 30) retired to consider their findings and conclusions.
Lauren, from Bournemouth in Dorset, who had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) alongside Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), had been transferred to a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Cheadle Royal in July 2021.
PICU’s are intended to be short-term placements, the jury have been told, and by September 3 2021, Lauren’s consultant deemed she was ready to ‘step down’ another unit closer to home.
However she remained at the unit at the time of her death some five months later.
Summing up, assistant coroner Bridgman said the question of why was the ‘overarching issue at the start of the inquest.’
He asked the jury to consider if ‘the distance from home was a contributing factor in the deterioration’ of her mental health. And if so, if ‘that deterioration of Lauren’s mental health was a contributing factor to her actions’ on February 24.
If the jury found it was, they could examine and comment on the ‘reasons for prolonged admission or delayed discharge’ Mr Bridgman added.
