‘Joy Ride,’ Adele Lim Directorial Debut Starring Ashley Park and Stephanie Hsu, to Premiere at South by Southwest

Ray Romano has been a household name in the US for decades now, thanks to his sitcom career. However, in recent years, he’s been doing a lot more indie stuff, flexing his dramatic muscles a bit.

Rihanna will perform her Original Song nominee “Lift Me Up,” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Diane Warren and Sofia Carson will also be there to give a live rendition of the Warren-penned nominated song, “Applause,” from “Tell It Like a Woman.” The Academy has not announced whether all the Best Original Song nominees will perform during the telecast, but a person with knowledge of the plans recently told TheWrap that it was likely all the songs would be performed on the show. The producers will be announcing more performers in the weeks ahead.

Thirty-five years after winning the Oscar for original score for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, David Byrne is back at the 95th edition of the awards ceremony performing the Oscar-nominated song “This is A Life” from Everything Everywhere All at Once with the pic’s composers and song writer Son Lux and the pic’s Oscar nominated supporting actress Stephanie Hsu. Japanese sing Mitski sings the end credits song in the movie with Byrne.

Stephanie Hsu is really busy — the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Oscar nominee has been commuting from California to Australia for the past few weeks while filming “The Fall Guy” with Ryan Gosling and attending various events and ceremonies to promote “Everything Everywhere,” directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, which earned 11 Academy Award nominations. She beams with pride when discussing this moment in her life. The daughter of a Chinese immigrant who was a single mother, Hsu has been talking with her family and friends about the road that’s led her to this moment — including her best friend Alan, who told her she did it without having to be “born into this industry,” or a family friend emailing her mother to recall the time she brought a young Hsu to the friend’s house intending to convince her to study business. “Aren’t you glad she didn’t?” the friend wrote.

Callum McLennan Bendita Film Sales has grown its slate acquiring Itsaso Arana’s directorial debut “The Girls Are Alright,” (“Las chicas están bien”).  The acquisition marks the latest pick up by the Tenerife based-outfit following recent announcements on Juan Sebastián Torales’ “Almamula,” and Lois Patiño’s “Samsara,” both featuring at the Berlinale. The film has already secured domestic distribution in Spain with Elástica Films.   “Itsaso gave us the chance to read one of the first versions of the script for ‘The Girls Are Alright.’ We immediately fell in love and realized that we were dealing with a singular talent, with a unique vision,” said Luis Renart, head of Bendita Film Sales. “It has been a pleasure to follow the evolution of this project and to finally discover this beautiful, festive and unique film, which we are thrilled to bring to audiences around the world,” he added.

Catherine Bray “A Radiant Girl” is set in Paris in 1942, but you’d hardly know it from spending time with the film’s 19-year-old protagonist, Irene (Rebecca Marder) — at least not to begin with. Irene is, as the title suggests, a lovely young woman, practically vibrating with joie de vivre. An aspiring actor, she spends her days rehearsing for the entrance exam to the prestigious Paris Conservatory, which leaves her just about enough time to argue charmingly but lovingly with her tight-knit French-Jewish family, and tentatively pursue romance with a dishy young doctor (in one amusing scene, she attempts to fail an eye test in order to have an excuse to see him again). In a nutshell, Irene is somebody thoroughly determined to live every moment to its fullest.

Lionsgate has named Joy Ride as the title of its upcoming comedy marking the feature directorial debut of Crazy Rich Asians scribe Adele Lim. The studio also on Monday unveiled the first still from the film, which you can view below.
