Broadway‘s Sweeney Todd stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford will play their final performances in the Stephen Sondheim revival on Sunday January 14, 2024, concluding their 46-week run headlining the critically lauded hit production, producers announced today.
The production is currently on-sale through January 14 but will extend its run into the spring of 2024. New casting as well as extension dates and ticket on-sale information will be announced shortly.
Both Groban and Ashford were Tony-nominated for their Sweeney performances. The musical, which opened March 26, has become one of Broadway’s biggest hits, routinely selling out the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and grossing well above the $1M mark (for the week ending Oct. 15, the show took in $1,739,035).
Producers will need to choose their replacements carefully: Attendance at Sweeney dropped considerably – about 20% – in August when the stars missed performances after coming down with Covid. While the musical received across-the-board raves, the star power, particularly among the devoted fans of Groban, has made for considerable audience appeal.
Directed by Thomas Kail, and featuring music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler (from an adaptation by Christopher Bond), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street began performances on February 26 and opened on March 26). The revival is led by producer Jeffrey Seller.
Sweeney Todd will launch a national tour in late winter-early spring of 2025 that will span both the 2024/25 and 2025/26 theatrical seasons. Casting, dates and cities for the national tour will be announced at a later date.
