For Kate Richardson, stepping from her doorstep is a daunting struggle against the grip of internal unease and panic. "I’m scared a lot of the time and overthinking," she admits. "I feel dread leaving my home. It can be really hard for me."
Kate, 58, has suffered from agoraphobia (the extreme fear of being outside or in crowded spaces) for over 30 years after the traumatic event when she, at 18 years old, was knocked down by a car.
Afterwards, simple tasks like shopping evoked an overwhelming sense of anxiety and vulnerability, leading to debilitating panic attacks, rendering stepping outside an enduring challenge.

"I fractured my pelvis and left the hospital after 10 days, but in 1984, you weren’t socialised on mental health conditions following a physical accident.
"So it took me decades to accept I was having panic attacks. I thought I had the flu all the time from sweating and panicking. It got worse from difficulties in crossing the road to leaving home," she tells the Manchester Evening News.
Kate, who works part-time at Whalley Range Community Forum, navigates her life with resilience, despite battling anxiety. However, amid her daily struggles, a simple yet impactful solution has emerged - food parcels delivered to her doorstep.
For the last six months, she has been a client with Humans MCR, a Blackley-based food poverty charity which delivers to residents in most need across the region. Under their community grocers programme, it means she can receive healthy, nutritious food at a 70% reduced price
