Judy Parfitt, the actress known for her portrayal of Sister Monica Joan in Call the Midwife, has had a remarkable career spanning decades across stage, silver screen, and TV. Judy's talent has earned her recognition and acclaim in various productions, establishing her as a respected figure in the entertainment industry. Her journey in acting began after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1953.
She honed her craft in theatre, sharing the stage with legendary actors like Laurence Olivier and working with esteemed companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company. On screen, the 86 year old has delivered memorable performances in a wide range of roles. Notable highlights of her filmography include appearances in productions like The Jewel in the Crown, which earned her a BAFTA nomination, and Pride and Prejudice, where she portrayed the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
She received another BAFTA nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role as Maria Thins in 2003's Girl with a Pearl Earring. Judy has also graced the big screen in movies like Ever After: A Cinderella Story and Wilde, alongside Stephen Fry. In addition to her acclaimed film work, Judy has made notable guest appearances in popular television series, including Midsomer Murders, where she appeared once in 1999 as Angela Wentworth and again in 2008 as Caroline Halsey.
She even appeared in an episode of Heartbeat as Lady Veronique in 2008.
The star has also worked on Agatha Christie series, Vera and Jonathan Creek. Her ability to bring characters to life on the small screen has earned her widespread admiration from audiences and critics alike. Outside of her professional accomplishments, Judy married Tony Steedman in 1963.
