Imran Khan, the former Pakistan Prime Minister, has been shot in what is understood to be an assassination attempt. It is believed Khan was injured in his foot during the incident.
He was giving a speech at a rally in Wazirabad when a gunman reportedly opened fire at a container truck he was travelling in, his supporters say. Local reports claim the politician was quickly carried away through a crowd of his supporters.
The gunman was arrested by police at the scene but his identity is not known and no group has claimed responsibility for the shooting. Police say the attack happened in the Wazirabad district in the eastern Punjab province where Khan was traveling in a large convoy of trucks and cars heading towards the capital, Islamabad, as part of his campaign aimed at forcing the government to hold early elections.
Party official Asad Umar said Khan was wounded in the foot and was not seriously hurt. He was later seen with a bandage on his foot as he moved to another vehicle while announcements called that he was safe.
Some of the supporters from his Tehreek-e-Insaf party were also wounded, according to the announcement from the party.
The attack happened less than a week after Khan began his march from Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, along with thousands of supporters. Since his ouster in a no-confidence vote in Parliament in April, Khan has alleged that his ouster was a conspiracy engineered by his successor, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and the United States - claims that both the new premier and Washington have denied.
