Rishi Sunak has declared he is running in the Tory leadership race by promising to "fix" the ailing UK econonmy,
He tweeted: “The United Kingdom is a great country but we face a profound economic crisis.
“That’s why I am standing to be leader of the Conservative Party and your next prime minister.
“I want to fix our economy, unite our party and deliver for our country.”
A candidate to be next Tory leader must secure the support of 100 Tory MPs by 2pm on Monday. A maximum of three MPs would be able to meet this threshhold.
- If only one candidate receives this level of backing, he or she will become Tory leader and the next PM.
- If all three candidates make the cut, a vote of MPs will take place between 3.30pm and 5.30pm on Monday, with the person in third place dropping out.
- If two candidates are left in the race, there will be an indicative vote of all Tory MPs between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Monday to show who is the most popular candidate among members of parliament.
- If the second placed candidate stays in the race after the indicative vote, 180,000 party members will vote online on Friday October 28th, with the result announced on the same day.
Tory MPs wishing to be a candidate in the race to become the next PM have to secure the support of 100 colleagues by tomorrow.
Sunak, Boris Johnson and Penny Mordaunt are expected to be the candidates.
The former chancellor, who fell out badly with Johnson when he resigned from his Cabinet in the summer, is ahead and speculation has mounted he could win without a contest.
