This time, however, it was his shot-stopping credentials that are usually so reliable that attracted criticism. And former Hammers ace Defoe admitted that even he would have been confident of keeping Benrahma's effort out of the net, such was the lack of power on the shot.
"I know I have upset a lot of goalkeepers over the years but I am about to do it again, Defoe told BBC Sport. "For someone that has played 540 games, you would like to think there would be fewer mistakes from one of your senior players.
"He got the West Ham crowd up, the players up, and every time I watch it it gets worse, to be honest. West Ham counter-attack and there is no danger, to be honest.
