Jaap Stam has unpacked how hard it might be for Erik ten Hag to find a suitable replacement for David de Gea at Manchester United, should the club opt to find a new No.1.
The Manchester Evening News understands that the Spaniard is at risk of losing his first-choice status going forward with United keeping tabs on Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The 32-year-old is under the spotlight following his error for the only goal of the game in Sunday’s 1-0 loss to West Ham. It’s the latest in a series of mistakes from the goalkeeper this season, including blunders against Brentford and Sevilla.

However, Stam believes the hunt for a suitable direct replacement is no simple task and says a number of questions would need answering. Speaking to MEN Sport, he said: “We can say we want a different goalkeeper, a new goalkeeper - first you need to look if there’s a better goalkeeper around that you can buy than De Gea.
“It’s easy to say we can get rid of him and bring somebody else in. [Will he] produce immediately the level that you want to see? And is he really a better goalkeeper than De Gea?
“So you need to think about these decisions as well. I think De Gea is a good goalkeeper."
Stam says De Gea “has been very important for United” and has made some “crucial saves” this season. He acknowledges the shot-stopper has made mistakes trying to adapt to Ten Hag’s philosophy but believes Ten Hag ought to stick with the 2011 signing for now with the view of finding a long-term alternative.
He added: "Now and then he makes a mistake but I think everybody is making mistakes in football, that’s how the game is being played as well or you won’t see any goals anyway.
