A postmaster caught in the Post Office scandal revealed the shocking impact on his life during Good Morning Britain. Hosts Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid addressed one of the hot topics of the moment on Wednesday, 10 January – ITV's Mr Bates vs The Post Office and the devastating impact on those whose lives were destroyed by the shocking miscarriages of justice that occurred. Susanna then introduced a moving video interview with Parmod Kalia, one of the few former subpostmasters to have had their conviction quashed - but who claims it does not reverse the damage done.
Parmod, whose life was nearly destroyed by the shocking scandal, revealed that the impact of being wrongly accused of stealing thousands of pounds from the Post Office had left him totally ostracised from his family, leading him to attempt to take his own life. His own family didn’t believe he was telling the truth, until they watched the hit ITV drama, which stars Toby Jones as activist and former sub-postmaster Alan Bates. “My daughter was sitting with me.
She actually apologised for thinking I took the money”, confessed an emotional Parmod.. “The family now understands what has actually happened. But it’s destroyed me mentally.
I’ve cooped it up mentally within myself. He added: “It was the build-up of not knowing what it was, having no one to discuss it with. I’ve lost 22 years of my life, no earning capacity.
“I’ve had a breakdown with my family - my wife, my children. Shame in the community. I’ve attempted suicide on three occasions as well.” Richard, in disbelief at what he’d just heard, said: “Imagine turning someone’s own family against them.
