Every Friday, as lights go out in Manchester's offices, thousands spill into pubs and bars ready to start their weekend. It may be the end of the working week for most, but for Greater Manchester Police it signals the start of a vitally important operation.
Officers from every corner of our region are called in to support the mammoth task of policing Manchester's night time economy. The challenges can be numbered and complex, but the goal is simple - to try to make sure everyone has a good and safe night out.
It's no small feat in an area that has 200,000 people coming and going on a daily basis, and can see thousands of these pile into venues just a few feet from each other. Add alcohol and drugs into the mix, and any situation can turn quickly - especially when interactions become violent or predatory.
The Manchester Evening News joined GMP's Operation Custodian, which deals with policing the night time economy, for a night following our extensive recent reporting on 'creepy' viral TikTok videos filming women without their knowledge while on nights out in the city centre.

Chief Inspector Stephen Wiggins, who heads up the city centre operation, said Operation Custodian plays a major role in making sure you have a safe night out - even if you don't realise it.
"We deal with a complete mix of incidents," he told the M.E.N as officers began trickling into the force's city centre office ahead of their 10pm briefing. "We have incidences of neighbourhood crime, of course people can be intoxicated, we have mental health, we have people reported missing, we have reports of assault.
