Unfortunately for Bernard, his debut will be remembered by most for scoring an own-goal that led to Astana clinching all three points. Nevertheless, it did not take the shine off an evening he is unlikely to ever forget.
"It was a very special moment for me," Bernard told the Manchester Evening News. "I think it made it easier for me because I made my debut with a lot of the youth team boys that came up with me, mixed in with a few first-team players, like Luke Shaw and Lingard.
"Axel was next to me. But loads of the youth team boys were on the bench and obviously some played.
"It was in Kazakhstan, it was a far trip, very cold, but it was a moment that will live with me forever. It also made it easier because I think Kieran (McKenna) was the coach at the time as well and he was my youth team coach, so it was
