Attending a cervical screening at any age is not a pleasant experience. Worryingly, some women put it off completely.
This week marks Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (January 22 to 27). Charities and health services across the UK are encouraging women - and those born female - to attend cervical screenings.
They say it's the best way to prevent cervical cancer. A cervical screening - or smear test as it is more commonly known - is a physical examination of the cervix. It's designed to detect any abnormalities, such as potentially cancerous cells.
Laura Flaherty, a young mum to two small kids, leads a busy life. At 29, she ignored the dreaded white letters that came through her letterbox, reminding her it was time for a test,
"As ridiculous as it sounds - I didn’t think it was that important," she said. "In my head, I thought it was a test for cancer."
"It just didn’t seem important because I was busy - I was working, had two young children to look after - you just never put yourself first. And on top of that, I didn’t really want anyone looking down there, so I found any excuse.
"Not knowing how a cervical screening worked at the time, I didn’t know it wasn’t actually a test for cancer, but a preventative measure to check abnormal cells. I always felt like I would’ve known if I had something wrong."
