When Jo Roberts, now 48, from Cumbria, had a missed miscarriage at 40, things would never be the same. A year later, she split with her partner after a decade together. Here, she explains how joy and love came back into her life in the form of a special furry friend… ‘I’d been overjoyed when my partner and I found out we were having a baby.
We had unexplained infertility and had been trying for years. My boyfriend Nat, 50, was a father to a child from a previous relationship but I’d never experienced motherhood with a baby of my own.
There were a couple of weeks in my pregnancy where everything felt perfect and right, despite the sickness I had. But then it was picked up on a scan that I’d had a missed miscarriage.
It was very traumatic – mentally, physically and emotionally. For a while, I felt life wasn’t worth living and I had a massive gaping hole in my heart. About a year later, my relationship broke down and life seemed to spiral out of control – I was all over the place.
By 2018, I’d got a bit stronger and bought a house in Cumbria and was doing coast-to-coast work as a guide on walking holidays. I’d been looking into fostering or adopting children, but my working life wasn’t conducive to it, which was a tough realisation. She stole my heart In 2019, life changed for the better when I met a dog called Millie at a neighbour’s house.
She put her head on my knee and stole my heart. Millie, who was called Lily at the time, had been rescued from a kill shelter in Romania where she’d been listed to be euthanised. When my friend, who was her emergency foster carer, told me she could be adopted elsewhere, I took the crazy, heart-led decision to take her home.
