With the current tax year coming to an end in just over a week, HSBC has issued advice to all of its customers advising them on how to avoid "tax year" fraudsters. These scam artists target individuals at a time of year when money is at the front of many people's minds.
This time of year brings with it talk of tax returns, rebates, and ISAs, with many legitimate banks and government organisations contacting people to let them know they are due a sum of money, or owe it. Because of this, HSBC are telling their customers to "be on the lookout" for scammers using the typically rushed end of the tax year to try and fool people out of their hard-earned cash.
These scammers may try to trick you into handing over your account or card details by telling you that you are due a tax rebate, or they might plunder thousands from your bank account by telling you that you need to send tax payments - which will only end up in the pockets of cyber criminals.

But there are ways to avoid being one of the many thousands of people who are being defrauded online, according to HSBC's advice on how to avoid fraud. Last year alone, 400,000 cases of fraud were reported to the National Fraud Database, which translates to roughly £7.5 billion in cash stolen from hard-working people.
HSBC's anti-fraud experts say: "Don’t let your guard down. If you get an email or message from HMRC, stop and think.
"Could it be a scam? HMRC will never ask you to hand over confidential information like passwords, one-time passcodes (OTPs) or your PIN. You should also never share your HMRC login details."
