This year the Eurovision Song Contest is taking place right here in the UK. Liverpool is hosting the competition on behalf of last year’s winners Ukraine, who are unable to host the contest due to the war.
The UK was chosen as the location for the 2023 contest after Sam Ryder came second in 2022 in Turin, Italy. The singer wowed Eurovision audiences with his performance of Space Man.
Sam received a whopping 466 points, making him the highest-scoring UK Eurovision entrant. The singer won the jury vote, with 283 points from the juries and 183 points from public votes. He achieved the UK’s best result since 1998, and its first top three placement since 2002.
Not only did he come second, he also won a Marcel Bezençon Award Press Award, becoming the first UK act to win a Bezençon award. Named after the creator of the competition, the awards recognise some of the best songs in the final.
He came second to Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra, who won the contest with their song Stefania. They won with 631 and became the country’s third winning act.
Hoping to recreate Sam Ryder’s success for the UK this year is 25-year-old Mae Muller. She will perform I Wrote A Song in the Grand Final.
