It has been a legendary week for 16-year-old Luke Littler. The teenager became the youngest ever player to reach the final of the World Darts Championship, and became a national star along the way.
Littler, from Warrington, narrowly missed out on the title to world number one Luke Humphries, but still collected a sizeable prize sum of £200,000. However, shortly after his win, HMRC tweeted to remind the youngster he would be taxed on his earnings.
It came after investment platform Saxo estimated Littler will have to pay £76,203 in tax, as well as £7,330 in National Insurance, which means his winnings will be cut by almost half, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Responding to reports of this, HMRC hit out on social media. A post on X, formerly Twitter, from the HMRC press office account simply said: "Big congrats to Luke on his fantastic run to the final. We can confirm the existence of income tax."
Other X users have been quick to reply, as Ginger said: "It's really something when your government feels comfortable smugly bragging about how they f*** you over." @aeowilf said: "Please take the intern away from the laptop, you’re an official government department not a stand-up comedian."
James said: "Almost half his earnings. What incentive is there to prosper when half your income is taken from you in exchange for the worst public services since the 70s?"
