An investigation is underway to determine what caused a furnace at a heat treatment works to malfunction causing a fire and sparking a huge emergency service response.
The drama unfolded at the Wallwork plant in Bury shortly before 7:30am on Sunday morning. A fire broke out involving a production furnace that had 'failed.'
Fire crews, police and paramedics raced to the scene on Lord Street, just outside the town centre, with the surrounding streets being cordoned off and people being asked to avoid the area whilst firefighters tackled the blaze, and attempted to bring the furnace down to a safe temperature.

The response had by scaled down by mid-afternoon. Some crews remained at the scene until 10:30am this morning.
Wallwork have now issued a statement in which they thanked the emergency services and apologised for any disruption caused by the road closures. An internal investigation into what happened was now underway, they said.
In the statement, the company said: "Wallwork Heat Treatment Ltd processes customers’ metal components by the use of controlled heating and cooling to produce increased strength, wear resistance and other properties. Our customers include the aerospace, medical, transport and food manufacturing sectors.
"On Sunday morning 14th January 2024, there was a small fire in one isolated production furnace which was fully contained within that unit.
"The organisation’s safety systems and procedures were implemented, and as a precaution we contacted Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to attend in case there was an unforeseen escalation to the incident, which there was not.
