While your Christmas lunch and the Boxing Day buffet may now be a distant memory, this January you'll want to pencil in a date to pay a visit to a rather special food festival. When it comes to indulging in comfort food, a hearty, homemade pie always ticks the box, so it will be music to many people's ears to hear that one Greater Manchester boozer is dedicating the first two months of the year to this no-nonsense, pub-grub staple.
Historic Salford pub, The Black Friar, has announced the return of its Pie Festival in January 2024, and will be serving up some of the best pies in the city for just £10. The menu will launch on Monday, 8 January and run until the end of February.
The now annual Pie Festival was introduced in 2022 following national food critic Jay Rayner’s glowing review of chef Ben Chaplin’s homemade pies, hailing them as “pies done proper”. A calling card of sorts, the Grade II-listed pub, which dates back over 200 years, aims to celebrate winter as pieseason and offers up homemade, proper northern pies with a range of fillings.

This year’s menu will include three signature pies, consisting of Creamy Chicken and Pancetta Pie, Minced Aged Beef and Root Vegetable Pie and Classic Fish Pie alongside. They'll be served alongside a host of daily ever-changing specials cooked up by chef Ben Chaplin and his team including a breakfast pie, a selection of curry fillings, sweet dessert pies and even a doggy pie, for man’s best friend.
The £10 pies will be available all day every Monday and will be served until
