This year's winner of The Great British Bake Off has been named as Matty Edgell. Matty took part in a tense final alongside Josh Smalley and Dan Hunter, but it was the PE and science teacher from Cambridgeshire who was named the winner of the 2023, which is the 14th season.
Presenters Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding, along with judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood were on hand to congratulate the 28-year-old during the finale episode which aired on Channel 4 on Tuesday evening.
In the semi final last week, contestants had to take part in some very tricky patisserie challenges which saw Tasha sent home and miss out on the final and Josh the Star Baker, leaving the last three bakers for an all-male final with Dan, Josh and Matty.
Bidding farewell to the show, Tasha said: "This is the scariest thing I’ve ever done, but I just wish I could relive it all over again because oh my goodness what a DREAM it was!"
Speaking ahead of winning, Matty said he felt like the "underdog" and was eager to "prove" himself. "Approaching the final I just wanted to give a good account of myself," he told the Press Association.
"I never focused on the stage we were at, as I knew that wouldn't be helpful. I felt like I was the underdog so wanted to prove to myself and anyone else that my place was valid with some final worthy bakes."
Matty was awarded Star Baker in Party Week.
“That was my favourite task,” he continues. “I am so unimaginative, but during Party Week I had a concept and an idea straight away.”
Ahead of the final episode, fans said they would have been happy to see any of the final three take home the crown, as one said: "All worthy contenders. They’ve been great in the tent!", while another added: "All of them would make worthy
